I spent my first 30 years in New York City, and I rarely got out of town. The song was originally written over 30 years ago, but I recently revised and updated the words. If you've ever been cooped up in a large city for a long time, you can really identify with the message. I wrote it right after I visited a rural section of New Hampshire, and realized how passionately I had needed to get away. The song has great harmonies, lead guitar, and tenor recorder. I pieced the parts together like a jigsaw puzzle, spending lots of time in my home studio. I took a singing course in the middle of recording the harmony parts, so you really hear my head voice in the background vocals from about the middle of the song onward. I wrote, arranged, and produced the song. I sang all the parts and played lead guitar. This song was first written in 1980, but I modified the lyrics, and I arranged and produced the song this year. I play many instruments, but I am most proficient at guitar and piano. Being a singer-songwriter has been my passion since the early 1970’s. I started out playing in coffee houses in New York City.
This past year, I have redoubled my efforts as a singer-songwriter because I became aware of the opportunities for independent musicians to get songs distributed through places such as CD Baby and to get songs heard on internet and non-commercial radio stations. I am so happy that my music can now be heard by thousands of people.
